Spring 2021 Reboot and Upcoming Fall League Season

Posted on 24 March 2021 by David Del Vecchio

As things are beginning to re-open, we are planning for an Spring 2021 reboot competition for teams interested in participating. This will be a shorter mini-season with several modifications due to COVID-19 protocols. The exact format will depend on the number of participating teams (we are currently considering round-robin, double elimination, or progressive elimination formats). The Spring 2021 reboot will run from mid-April through the end of May.

For Fall 2021, we hope to be able to resume with a full length season with playoffs following the regular league format.

Spring 2021 Reboot Competition Modifications

We will be following state and local guidelines for recreational sports which are depend in part on the county’s COVID-19 tier. LA County is currently in the Orange Tier which requires the following restrictions:

  1. Competition may be held either indoors or outdoors.
  2. Competition will be singles only (no doubles).
  3. All athletes, coaches, or other observers at competitions or practices must wear face coverings at all times (even when competing).
  4. When on the sidelines or not actively playing, 6 foot distance should be maintained between people at the event.
  5. Anyone with COVID symptoms (fever, cough, etc.) or who is in isolation/quarantine while recovering from a COVID infection should not participate in practice or competition. Temperature or wellness checks before each activity are encouraged where possible.
  6. All participants should wash or sanitize their hands (using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) before and after competition or practice.

In the event that LA County is moved into the Red Tier (or higher), the following modifications will be necessary:

  1. Competition must be held outdoors.
  2. All other guidelines mentioned above will stay the same.

League Rule Modifications for Outdoor Competition

  • A player is allowed to wait before serving, if he or she feels that the current conditions (wind, etc.) are going to interfere with the ball during the point.
  • During a rally, either player or can raise a hand in the middle of a point to call a let in the case of any sudden change in playing conditions (due to wind, weather, etc.) that may affect the point. Upon calling a let, the point will replayed.

Note that due to the short timeline for the mini-season and due to COVID restrictions, there will not be an end-of-season banquet or awards given out for the Spring 2021 Reboot competition.
